Bottom line, what makes a timeless yet elegant wedding gown? White/ off-white, more luxurious fabrics instead of common ones are a must. It should also be floor length if reinforced by a train and a chapel-length veil. Ankle-length dresses with a veil will look tacky and oddly matched, and may be confused with the bridesmaids' dresses.

That's not to say the modern bride can't be adventurous. While understated elegance is at the bottom of a timeless wedding dress, adding your own personality to an otherwise classic piece is always a refreshing gesture. A famous bridal gown designer, for instance, first came up with “illusion sleeves” to what appears to be a strapless A-line dress. The sheer sleeves added a whimsical touch and yet still create a sensuous overall look and feel for the blushing bride. And if the wedding has a theme or motif, there's no set rule preventing the modern bride from adding accents that reflect these, so long as she doesn't go full hog on the accessories. Some fine examples: an obi sash, elbow gloves, “borrowed” jewelry, a simple tiara, etc. can add elegance and polish to an already classic, timeless masterpiece. ###
