Seeing Stars and Celebrities in Wedding Dresses
by Tommy Glauning - Article Copyrighted 2008, hotbridesonline.com -

I had an interesting chat with an old friend the other day. We haven't seen each other for some time and catching up on each other's personal affairs merited a whole afternoon of alternating jeers and cheers, perked up by servings of cappuccino Grande.

Oh, it was not totally like one of those coffee commercials where a cup drifts you off into bliss – it was more like a heavy introspection where our lives are heading. The last time we talked, she was all hyped about getting married in India. Like the good friend that I am, I was happy for her. All her friends were.

I'm not going into details now where and how and if the wedding ever pushed through. It's still a sensitive topic and I'd feel downright unethical if I blurt it all out for the world to read. The thing is – her dream wedding – made me think.

Don't we all (at some point in our lives) desire a fairy tale wedding? Where a mysterious, dashing, and charming Rajah or Prince will come and whisk you away to lands faraway? Wouldn't we like to spend our honeymoon in exotic Asia or classical Europe? Ugh. How so anti-feminist you might say. But really, I believe that even the most hardened anti-marital institution proponent – had or have such fantasies.

When I got home that night, I was also reminded of this episode from that successful 90s sitcom, Friends. In a borrowed wedding dress, Monica indulges her wedding dreams up to the point of wearing the dress even while doing the dishes.

The dress was in traditional white and had simple cuts and trimmings. There was nothing grand about it. But Monica slash Courtney Cox in it was stunning and radiant – yes, even with dishwashing gloves. Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) followed league – and it became puzzling to me at some point – how these three beautiful women could echo our collective exasperations? Where are the marriage proposals? Oh, a good man is hard to find says Flannery O Connor.

Although, some will say that the three gowns featured in that episode are passé, it's quite the contrary. In fact, those are all classic pieces … timeless styles that many 20 th century brides opt to wear. The dress adorning Courtney Cox, with its low neckline seemed only fitting for her somewhat bony physique. This is not to say that empire cut is only for those who have awkward, boyish bodies. The fact is that many choose to wear this cut to emphasize their more commendable features.

The pregnant Phoebe was also wearing an empire line but with a scooped plunging neckline. She did justice to the dress, and her baby bump wasn't all that noticeable. Although the dress was too simple for my taste, the lace appliqués on the bodice added that much needed touch of femininity. While Rachel, whose gown I loved the most, looked like a real princess in her ball gown wedding dress. The off shoulder, sweetheart neckline made her neck seem longer; while the waistline showed off her curves.

Chandler and Monica, celebrity wedding fantasy

It just bothered me that in the Friends video Monica was wearing what looked like the kind of veil a flower girl would wear. During the 90s, it might have been fashionable, but not to the modern bride. Besides, with the veil and her short hair, it wasn't a very flattering look. On the other hand, I adore Phoebe's choice. Her upswept hair and the veil clearly outlined her oval face. It was a combination which I have seen on many brides.

I suppose even in their real lives, Hollywood royals would have to submit to the fact that all is fair in love and war. Right Ms. Aniston?

The only real edge they have over us ordinary folks is that when they get married – they can have weddings straight out of a children's storybook – and no expense is even too much.
